If you’re like most coaches, you’re probably wondering how to get coaching clients. It’s the coaching business dilemma. You want to make a difference, but you just haven’t found enough clients yet. How do you start your life coaching business and get those first few clients? Here is one simple method how to get coaching clients without fancy technology or expensive marketing.
Develop a List of People You Know and Start With Those You Know Best as You Are Thinking About How to Get Coaching Clients
The best way to approach your life coaching business is to take inventory of all the people you know. Include family, friends, people who are so close to you that they would never pay you to coach them. This is the first group. I’m not suggesting that how to get coaching clients is to get these people to enroll, but they are a great place to start. Start by offering free sessions for them and make a difference in their lives. You aren’t like to get new life coaching business, but if you do a good job you are highly likely to referrals for more free sessions. - “I am not experienced enough to charge more.”

“A recent Harvard Business Review report noted coaching fees range from around 100 bucks to over 3K for a session. That’s quite a range. How do you figure out your sweet spot-the place your clients are willing to pay for your services? Ah, this is not a simple question, nor a simply answered question. But here’s what I know:
- You can’t charge more than you can comfortably ask because your discomfort will show through and hurt your credibility
- Your mindset influences your ability to set fees, therefore, as your confidence grows, so will your fees
- You have to determine if you’re a commodity service or a professional service: we bargain for commodities, we respect professionals
- Consider Packaging your Services: Many in private practice charge by the hours per month. But that’s not the only way to make a living
- Pay attention to your “league”. Are you in the majors, minors or varsity league? Plan out what it will take to move up, if you want to.

Your Life Coaching Business: The Crucial First Step
The journey of a thousand miles in your life coaching business begins with the first step. That first step is where most people teeter, fall, or even quit. The coaches journey is not a journey of circumstances, but of the inner game. Jason Westlake paints lovely role picture of this process in his article.
When you are first starting out, each step seems arduous. Every action, every person you speak to can bring butterflies to your stomach. I know the difficulty in what it takes to actually charge for your coaching. I know the feeling that there are no clients around.
All of it has to do with you. Every last bit of it. Getting clients is nothing more than a process of self-discovery. Getting clients is literally about staking a claim for your own value, for who you really are. Getting clients is about making a statement to the world. A statement that you coach, that you are going to serve people.
Making this claim is like creating a space for yourself, an island for yourself with the waves of fear and the doubts of others crashing at your shore. Yet, you make your island regardless. Even though those waves are pretty darn convincing.
The hardest part is making the claim. Staking your space. Proclaiming to the world that you are a coach, that you have capacities to serve people and make a difference for them. That’s what takes most coaches years of struggle to do, if they ever even get there.
Once you make that claim, clients start showing up on your island. The reason they show up is because they see you have made your claim. They show up because YOU believe YOU. And that causes them to believe you. Because they feel your inner strength, your inner alignment with who you are.

To Niche Or Not To Niche
If you are just starting out, you don’t need to worry about a niche yet. If you have one, great; but if you don’t know what your niche is yet, don’t worry. In fact, I believe it is unwise for many coaches to select a niche too early in the process of building their practice. You may not know who is particularly attracted to you yet and you may not know how deep, enjoyable, or sustainable a particular, narrow group of clients might be.
A true and very productive niche is something that evolves over time. And it can take many months to really brand and position yourself firmly within a niche. If you are just starting out and want clients quickly, my best advice is to focus your marketing on the people you already know and let your niche, if you choose one, develop in time.
If you are well trained as a coach and put in the requisite ongoing marketing efforts, it is possible to coach without a niche. However most coaches experience significant advantages in focusing their marketing efforts towards a particular set of clients. In other words, if you choose the right niche – that is a great fit for your passions, expertise and experience – for a given investment in marketing you will receive a much better return. And as the profession of coaching grows it will be even more important to have a niche.

2. Create lead-in products that easily convert lookers into buyers. If you charge $100 per hour for consulting, don’t expect too many people to beat down your door to pay you that right off the bat. Baby step them into doing business with you. Create products and services at different price points so that people can easily have a buying experience with you. Typical baby step products would be ebooks, books, online courses, teleclasses, workbooks, CD’s and audiotapes, workshops/seminars, etc. For example, you might have a $12 ebook, a $19 book, a $49 manual, a $89 multi-session teleclass, etc.
3. Promote your free and low-end products & services first. Once you’ve created products and services at different price points, spend your marketing dollar promoting your lead-in products. Send visitors who read your articles to your ezine subscription page, to a free product or service page, or to information on one of your lower-priced products. Don’t waste valuable marketing dollars promoting your most expensive product or service. Build trust first. Lead them through your products and services step-by-step until they’re happy to pay your hourly consulting rate.

How To Become A Wellness Coach: The Bare Essentials
It’s not as difficult to become a wellness coach as most people would imagine. In fact, the opportunities in the wellness coaching field are growing exponentially both in the corporate and private sectors. In fact, with all the advances in healthcare technologies in the U.S., we are one of the sickest nations in the world. How can you get started? What kind of training do you need to be a Wellness Coach?
A good question to ask is what differentiates a wellness coach from a nutritionist or trainer. The fact of the matter is that there are no ‘requirements’ for an individual to label their business as ‘coaching’. We see this trend in executive coaching, life coaching, business coaching, and real estate coaching. There are no laws that require a certain certification to call yourself a coach in any field! So go ahead and call yourself a coach – but be ready to explain why you are a coach and not a trainer etc. when someone asks (obviously this is not my recommendation).
So that is interesting – then what kind of training do I typically need. Well a strong foundation in nutrition, exercise physiology, stress management, or combination of these will be a great starting point. To truly master coaching, I would recommend going through an accredited coach training program to learn the keys to communicating as a coach and supporting people in finding their own answers. Typically one of these courses takes 12 months to 3 years as they require a number of practical application hours as well. There are a variety of programs with different emphasis, so my suggestion is to find one that fits well with you.
There are programs specifically tailored for wellness coaches to learn the fundamentals of coaching in relation to health and wellness. These tend to be shorter courses (on the range of 3-6 months) and are not accredited by the major credentialing organizations. The most popular example is wellcoaches – an online/on phone training program that gives you the basics and foundation of becoming a coach. This is a great start – my personal preference is a full life coach training program as it goes into great depth for developing listening schools and understanding client perspectives and I found the program I attended to be absolutely fantastic.

Life coaching salaries have little to do with the value you provide in the context of your coaching. I know a lot of great coaches who don’t make what they could be. It’s not because of their lack of coaching skills, but more so a mis-understanding of what it takes to make money coaching.

As I’m sure you already know,… one of the most important things for life coaches to master is the art of fee setting.
It’s probably also the thing that people are most uncomfortable about, and the most poorly understood.
